Summary:

The collection consists of advertisements and promotional materials highlighting the Rocky Mountain West and Pacific Coast areas, with emphasis on Idaho.

Content Description

Promotional material for tourists and immigrants to the West from the late 19th century to the 1980s. Although covering Rocky Mountain West and the Pacific Coast areas, emphasis is given to Idaho. The material reflects the efforts of chambers of commerce, railroad and mining companies, realtors, and local, regional, and state agencies to promote their states. Covering all aspects of Idaho industry and agriculture for the immigrant, and recreational and environmental benefits of cities and towns in Idaho, the collection represents a cross-section of about a hundred years of advertisement and promotion. Photography, art work, and sweet words were and still are used by the promoters to receive the attention of tourists and migrants.

Arrangement

The collection is divided into four main sections. Pacific Region (California, Oregon, Washington) and Intermountain Region (Colorado, Montana, Utah, Wyoming) represent two broad sections of the collection. The state of Idaho is broken down into several sections: Idaho cities (without Boise); Idaho cities (Boise only); state and regional Idaho material; and Idaho topics (potatoes and Oregon trail).
