Biographical Note
Abigail (Abbie) and Martha (Mattie) Wright were sisters from Corvallis,
Oregon, who earned degrees from Oregon Agricultural College in the
1880s-1890s.
Abbie Wright graduated from Corvallis College in 1882 and was a teacher
in Corvallis, Yaquina, Albany, and Portland. She died between 1917 and
1922.
Mattie Wright graduated from Oregon Agricultural College in 1896. She
was born in Corvallis in 1876 and married James Lorraine Davidson in 1897. She
died in Portland in the 1950s.
The Wright family also used the spelling "Right" for the family
name.
Content Description
The Abigail and Mattie Wright Collection consists of materials
documenting Abbie Wright's teaching career and Mattie Wright's years as a
student at Oregon Agricultural College. The Collection consists of paper
records and photographs.
Records pertaining to Abbie Wright include her teaching certificate
(1886); letters of reference from Corvallis, Yaquina, and Albany (1888-1896),
including a letter from J.B. Horner; and her teaching contract for Portland in
1897.
Documents pertaining to Mattie Wright include an autograph book
(1889-1893) with poems and messages from students and teachers; a handwritten
history for the Class of 1896; and the 1896 commencement program.
Other publications include the June 1897
College Barometer and the December 20, 1911
issue of the
Tri-Weekly Republican, published in
Corvallis.
The photographs include images of Abbie Wright (circa 1910s); Frances
(Frankie) Cauthorn; groups of women students at Oregon Agricultural College
(1893-1895); Victor Moses; the Wright (Right) family residence in Corvallis; a
Corvallis reunion group (perhaps from Oregon Agricultural College); and an
image of J.B. Horner with Joaquin Miller. Photographers include W.S. Gardner
and S.E. Trask of Corvallis and G.L. Eastman of Portland.
