The Ethnic Studies Department Records consist of video recordings of a symposium, Sojourners, Settlers, New Immigrants: Mexicanos in Oregon Ayer y Hoy, held at Oregon State University in 2005.

 

Historical Note

The Ethnic Studies Department was established at Oregon State University in 1995 and began its full operation in 1996. While there are Ethnic Studies programs at several Oregon universities and colleges, the OSU Department is the only one with full departmental status.

Content Description

The Ethnic Studies Department Records consist of video recordings of selected sessions of the Sojourners, Settlers, New Immigrants: Mexicanos in Oregon Ayer y Hoy symposium held at Oregon State University in 2005. The recordings include the keynote presentation, La Inmigración Mexicana en Oregon: Perspectiva del Consulado Mexicano de Oregon, by Estela García León, Directora de Asuntos del Exterior, Mexican Consulate, Pórtland and four of the symposium's sessions.

Video recordings of the following sessions are included: Latinos and Labor in Oregon with speakers Ramón Ramírez and Jose Padín and facilitator Erika Castaño, discussing PCUN, Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste (Northwest Treeplanters and Farmworkers United); The Many Faces of Discrimination: Ayer y Hoy with speakers Andrew Valls, Guadalupe Quinn, William Brown and facilator Leslie Soriano; Mexican Indigenous Communities in Oregon with speakers Julie Samples, Santiago Ventura, and Jack Corbett and facilatator Juan Trujillo; and Reproducing Communities in Transnational Spaces with speakers Ricardo Larios, Erlinda Gonzales-Berry, and Willan Cervantes and facilitator Gabriela Rico.

Organized by the Ethnic Studies Department and the Minority Education Office, the symposium took place on May 13, 2005 at the Memorial Union. A symposium program is included in the collection. Master copies of the recordings (miniDV) and DVDs are available.

Acquisition Information 

The recordings and symposium program were acquired by the Archives staff in 2005 and transferred to the collection at that time.
