Biographical Note
Donald B. Zobel was a faculty member in the Oregon State University
Department of Botany and Plant Pathology from 1968 until his retirement in
2003. Zobel's research area was forest ecology; he worked on projects
concerning the water relations of trees in the Himalayas and in North
America and the recovery of plants buried by volcanic debris at Mount St.
Helens.
William W. Chilcote was Professor of Botany at Oregon State University from 1950 to 1981.
Content Description
The Donald B. Zobel Collection of Historic Forestry and Vegetation Maps
consists of maps assembled, annotated, or created by Zobel for his
research and teaching in forest ecology and botany. Some of the maps were assembled by William W. Chilcote, his students, and other Botany Department faculty. Most of the maps are
of Oregon, including McDonald Forest and the H.J. Andrews Experimental
Forest, and northern California. However, the collection includes maps of
forest types in midwestern states, a vegetation map of North America, and
map of initial damage from the May 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens,
Washington.
The primary topics addressed by the maps are forest types, forest and
vegetation cover, timber stands, soils and erosion. These include maps of
a cutbank stability reconnaissance survey in the Siskiyou National Forest
in the 1960s, the California soil vegetation survey in the 1950s and
1960s, and research on the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest by Jerry
Franklin and Ted Dyrness in the 1960s. The collection also includes
general purpose forest, recreation, and topographic maps. Of particular
note are a map of the of road system on the Warm Springs Indian
Reservation (1962); a topographic map of the Three Sisters, Oregon,
prepared by Edwin T. Hodge (1925); and a 1914 maps of the state of Oregon
published by the Oregon State Board of Forestry. A map of the vegetation
of North America prepared by John W. Harshberger in the 1910s is also
included.
The collection includes maps prepared by the Oregon State University
College of Foresty and OSU Research Forests; the U.S. Forest Service; the
Oregon Department of Forestry; the U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of
Land Management, and U.S. Geological Survey; and the California Division
of Foresty.
Arrangement
The Zobel Collection of Historic Foresty and Vegetation Maps is
arranged in five series: I. McDonald Forest, 1989; II. H.J. Andrews

Soil Vegetation Survey, 1950-1970
54 sheets
Series IV consists Soil Vegetation Maps, Timber Stand Vegetation Cover
Maps, and legends and supplementary information created as part of the
California Soil Vegetation Survey during the 1950s and 1960s. The soil
vegetation maps are of Humboldt County; the timber stand vegetation cover
maps depict areas of both Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. All maps are at
a scale of 1:31,680. The California Cooperative Soil-Vegetation Survey
documented the types of upland soils and the natural cover of trees,
shrubs, grasses, and other vegetation. It was a joint project of the
California Division of Foresty, the University of California, and the U.S.
Forest Service Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station.
