Summary:

Robert Lytle came from the Midwest to Oregon, where he began a law practice in Vale, Oregon in 1916. From 1920-1925, Lytle was Malheur County District Attorney, and served as city attorney for Vale, 1922-1967. The collection includes a few personal files, but most of the collection consists of selected case files representative of a varied practice, including cases regarding water rights. Miscellaneous files include correspondence in political matters, Oregon State Bar Association, Japanese-Americans in Malheur County, and Oregon State Bar v. Weinstein.

Historical Note
Robert Lytle was born in Watertown, South Dakota and received a high school education in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He studied law in LaCrosse and elsewhere, coming to Oregon via South Dakota and Montana in 1915. He was admitted to the Oregon bar in 1916, and commenced his practice in Vale. From 1920-1925, Lytle was Malheur County District Attorney, and served as city attorney for Vale, 1922-1967. A Republican, Lytle was moderately active in politics.
Content Description
The Robert Day Lytle papers include a few personal files, but the bulk is selected case files representative of a Lytle’s varied practice in law. Among the more interesting cases are those involving water rights, particularly suits against the Owyee Ditch Company in 1931. Miscellaneous files include correspondence in political matters, Oregon State Bar Association, Japanese-Americans in Malheur County, and Oregon State Bar vs. Weinstein. Files with confidential attorney-client information have been destroyed.
