Biographical Note
Architect John Storrs was born in 1920, and graduated from Dartmouth in 1942 and from Yale in 1950. He lived in Fairfield, Connecticut before moving to the Portland area, where he practiced since 1954. His projects represent a broad spectrum of architecture, and his innovative designs and planning approach have been a significant contribution to the Northwest Regional Style. Storrs specialized in wooden buildings, calling wood "an understandable, romantic material."
Content Description
The collection provides a representative sample of the architect's work in the Pacific Northwest. Included are final working drawings of residential and commercial buildings in Oregon and Washington as well as some preliminary drawings and revisions noted on blueprints. Of special note are drawings for the famous Salishan Lodge on the Oregon coast and the Portland Garden Club. Folders are arranged chronologically by the date of project.
Storrs designs not included are: western Forestry Center, Portland; U.S. Bank Building, Beaverton; Lakeridge High School, Oswego; St. Mary's Church, Corvallis; the Sokol-Blosser Winery, Dundee; Central Catholic High School, Portland; Oregon School of Arts and Crafts, Beaverton; and Allergy Associates Clinic, Portland.
