This collection contains the personal journals, correspondence, and case notes of Joseph Kehoe, a lawyer in Alaska.

 

Biographical Note

Joseph W. Kehoe was born in Portland, Oregon in 1890. He attended the University of Oregon School of Law and became an attorney in Portland. In 1919, he moved to Alaska and practiced law in Juneau. From 1924 to 1929, Kehoe was a United States Commissioner at Ketichikan. He also became a member of the Territorial Legislature in 1933 as well as 1943. While in Alaska from 1933-1943, he was a U.S. District Attorney, Third Division. Other prominent positions include: Special Assistant, U.S. Attorney General from 1943-1944; a U.S. District Judge, Second Division in Alaska form 1944 to 1951 and Secretary of Alaska from 1951 to 1952. Kehoe died in 1959.

Content Description

The Joseph Kehoe Papers are contained in 2 manuscript boxes. The papers consist of personal diaries in the first box spanning 1944 to 1955. The second box contains case notes and correspondence. The case notes are from 1944-1950 when Kehoe was a District Judge. The major correspondents include Harry P. Chandler, Rev. Jules M. Convert, S.J. and E.L. Bartlett and Ernest Gruening. The correspondence with Rev. Convert concerns unionization of the salmon canneries at St. Michael.

The journals are arranged in numbering starting from the right side and going back then continuing on the left side. The personal correspondence and case notes are arranged with the case notes in bound volumes, folders of correspondence and bound pamphlets. The collection was microfilmed in March of 1987.
