Records relating to Maloney's service as supervisor (1936) of a Civilian Conservation Corps camp at McGee Ranger Station, Idaho, detailing work in eradicating Ribes (wild current or gooseberry), an intermediate host of the fungus, blister rust, devastating white pine; records (1943-1945), chiefly bulletins, forms, and instructions, reflecting his activities as district manager of the Spokane, Wash., office of U.S. War Manpower Commission; and correspondence and printed material (1950-1964), concerning Maloney's tenure as employee and later postmaster (1951-1964) with U.S. Post Office Dept., in Spokane; and various financial records.

 

Biographical Note

Joseph Maloney went to work for the Panhandle Lumber Company at Spirit Lake, ID in 1915. He later served as superintendent. In 1936 he supervised a Civilian Conservation Corps camp at McGee Ranger Station, ID. He became district manager of the Spokane office of the War Manpower Commission in 1943, and manager of the Spokane office of the Washington State Tax Commission in 1945. Maloney began working for the United States Post Office in Spokane in 1951 and retired as postmaster in 1964. Active in the Democratic Party, Maloney twice served as a presidential elector and was a treasurer of the Spokane County Democratic Party.

Content Description

The bulk of the collection consists of Maloney’s records as superintendent of the Civilian Conservation Corps camp at McGee Ranger Station, ID, 1934-1939. Maloney’s crews were engages in eradicating Ribes (wild current or gooseberry), an intermediate host of the fungus, blister rust, that was devastating stands of white pine. The records, while fragmentary, are quite detailed.

The War Manpower Commission records are fragmentary, mostly forms and printed bulletins and instructions, 1943-1945.

The records of Maloney's tenure with the U.S. Post Office are incomplete, containing some correspondence and printed materials, 1950-1964.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into series as follows: inventory and miscellaneous person materials, 1901-1942; Civilan Conservation Corps, 1934-1939; Democratic Party activites, 1939-1966; insurance business activies, 1911-1943; vocational education, 1943-1944; War Manpower Comission, 1942-1968.
