The James Akin collection contains a diary recording events during the 1852 journey of the Richey, Ingram and Akin families to Oregon. The origins of this diary are unclear, since another James Akin diary is known to exist in the collections of the Wyoming state archives. Also included in the collection are secondary sources relating to the Akin diary and family history.

Location of Collection:

Collection is located with other small manuscript collections.

Historical Note

James Akin Jr. travelled to Oregon in 1852 from Iowa with a party of the Richey, Ingram and Akin families. He was born in North Carolina in 1807 and moved to Iowa in 1832. He died in Portland not long after his party reached Oregon in 1852. The origins of this diary are unclear since another James Akin diary is known to exist in the archives of the Wyoming State archives. The text of the diary here appears to be parallel to that of the Wyoming diary, with some small differences.

Content Description

The collection contains the 1852 diary of James Akin, an envelope in which the diary may have been kept, and two items of secondary literature. The first is a University of Oklahoma Bulletin from 1919. This publication presents a transcription of the James Akin Jr. diary; however, based on the text and photographic images contained therein, this publication appears to have been made from the Wyoming diary. The second is a program for a gathering of the "Richey Clan" in 1911. The program contains historical information provided by Frank Akin.
