Summary:

Diaries relating to Stratton's daily activities, the weather, family members, and her move from Michigan through Saint Paul, Minns., to Spokane, Wash., via the Northern Pacific Railroad (1889). Persons represented include her son, Rev. Howard W. Stratton, and son-in-law, J.J. Browne (who accompanied her for part of the trip).

Biographical Note

In 1889 Anna M. Stratton came to Spokane Falls to be near her son, the Reverend Howard W. Stratton, and her grandchildren. She left Michigan and went to St. Paul, MN, where she met her son-in-law, J.J. Browne, a Spokane Falls banker. Together they traveled to Washington Territory via the Northern Pacific Railroad. In Spokane Falls she became involved in church affairs, but she mainly spent her time with various members of the family.

Content Description

The seven diaries are extremely detailed and indicate a strong interest in family activities. Each entry begins with a quote from scripture and reflection on its meaning. The remainder of the entry is usually concerned with daily activities and observations. Often Mrs. Stratton comments on the behavior of her grandchildren, discusses the weather, or writes in great detail of the operation and activities of the household.
