Historical Note
The Seattle Center Department was created in 1965 to administer, manage,
and control the facilities on the site of the 1962 World's Fair. The facilities
at the Seattle Center date back to 1926 with completion of the construction of
the Civic Auditorium, Civic Arena, Veterans Hall, and the Civic Playfield. The
property expanded to 74 acres in 1962 to accomodate the World's Fair.
The Center's purpose is to be an active civic center providing
facilities and programs supporting the arts, education, sports, and
entertainment. It was home for the Seattle Opera, Seattle Symphony, Pacific
Northwest Ballet, and four resident theaters. In addition, four facilities
exist on the grounds that are not owned by the city: the Space Needle, Memorial
Stadium, the Experience Music Project, and the Pacific Science Center.
The Seattle Center Foundation, incorporated in 1977 to enhance the
Seattle Center as the regional focus for culture and urban recreation,
contracted with the Center in 1984 for administrative staff, basic operating
expenses, and some limited office services.
Content Description
The annual reports for the Seattle Center date from 1966 to 1988; a 1996
Report to Employees is also included. From 1966 to 1974, the reports include
information on accomplishments and activities for the year for various
divisions, as well as organization charts, financial information, facilities
usage, and attendance figures. Also included are maps of the grounds and
facility profiles. Later reports are much more brief, including
accomplishments, repairs and improvements, and other brief highlights. The 1996
Report to Employees reports on the accomplishments of various divisions as well
as discussing program highlights.
Arrangement
Annual reports are arranged chronologically by year.
Administrative Information
Custodial History Records were originally filed with the City Clerk in the
Comptroller/Clerk's Files (CFs) and were removed to create this record series.
Future Additions Annual reports will continue to be added to the series.
