George Steiner (1900- ) was a composer and conductor of music. The collection includes music manuscripts, correspondence, and notebooks.

 

Biographical Note

George Steiner was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1900. He studied music under Zoltan Kodaly, and began a career of composing and conducting in 1918. He was associated with Paramount studios in New York as a composer of background and mood music. He composed the score of the Chrysler Company Show at the New York World's Fair in 1939 and 1940. Steiner's major works include Rhapsodic Poem for Violin and Orchestra (1942); Poems Hongroise (for harp and orchestra, 1941); and Hora Burlesca (1941).

Content Description

The collection includes original compositions; arrangements; arrangements for radio; motion picture music; television music; mood and background music; notebooks; published pieces; photocopied music; correspondence, 1923-1963; biographical information; and recordings. All music manuscripts are originals, unless otherwise noted.
