Biographical Note

Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1969, Brien Sheedy earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Environmental Studies from SUNY ESF at Syracuse and a Master’s degree in Geography from the University of Texas at Austin. He has worked as a mountain guide since 1990, and before coming to Whitman College, he taught courses for the National Outdoor Leadership School for more than a decade. Since August, 2001, Sheedy has served as Director of the Outdoor Program at Whitman College.

An experienced climber, Sheedy ascended Denali, Kilimanjaro, and Aconcagua before Everest. He climbed Mount Everest from March 18 - June 4, 2004, as a non-guided climber on an International Mountain Guides Expedition, coordinated by Eric Simonson. He and his party summitted the mountain on May 15, 2004. Whitman College, Wing Ridge Ski Tours, and the National Outdoor Leadership School, among other organizations and individuals, sponsored his trip.

Content Description

The post-expedition report and the DVD I Dreamed of Everest constitute the richest sources in the collection. The report contains a daily log of the expedition and a trip budget. The DVD includes a 35 minute trip documentary produced by Brien Sheedy and a number of video clips and interviews not integrated into the documentary. Photographs and objects carried on the trip, including the Whitman pennant Sheedy displayed at the summit, constitute the remainder of the collection.
