Biographical Note
Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1969, Brien Sheedy earned a Bachelor’s
of Science degree in Environmental Studies from SUNY ESF at Syracuse and a
Master’s degree in Geography from the University of Texas at Austin. He has
worked as a mountain guide since 1990, and before coming to Whitman College, he
taught courses for the National Outdoor Leadership School for more than a
decade. Since August, 2001, Sheedy has served as Director of the Outdoor
Program at Whitman College.
An experienced climber, Sheedy ascended Denali, Kilimanjaro, and
Aconcagua before Everest. He climbed Mount Everest from March 18 - June 4,
2004, as a non-guided climber on an International Mountain Guides Expedition,
coordinated by Eric Simonson. He and his party summitted the mountain on May
15, 2004. Whitman College, Wing Ridge Ski Tours, and the National Outdoor
Leadership School, among other organizations and individuals, sponsored his
trip.
Content Description
The post-expedition report and the DVD
I Dreamed of Everest constitute the
richest sources in the collection. The report contains a daily log of the
expedition and a trip budget. The DVD includes a 35 minute trip documentary
produced by Brien Sheedy and a number of video clips and interviews not
integrated into the documentary. Photographs and objects carried on the trip,
including the Whitman pennant Sheedy displayed at the summit, constitute the
remainder of the collection.
