Content Description

The Stephen Avard papers consist of correspondence, business papers, legal documents, souvenirs, reminiscences and photographs concerning Stephen Thomas Avard (1880-1951), his brother Charles William Avard (ca. 1875-1956), his wife Julia Hamaker Eastman Avard (1911-1956), his mother-in-law Sarah Phillips Hamaker Simonton (ca. 1840-ca. 1925), and his wife's step-father Rolvin David Simonton (1843-1915). The papers document the Avard's emigration from England to California in the 1880's, their homesteading efforts at Nespelem on the Colville Indian Reservation in northeast Washington; Rolvin Simonton's work on railroads in northern Idaho and other aspects of frontier life in the far west.
