Historical Note
Organized in 1916, the Farm Crops Department was established to
coordinate research efforts in crop experimentation at the Oregon Agricultural
Experiment Station. Prior to 1916, Experiment Station research had been
directed by the Department of Agronomy, which was established in 1907. Among
the projects undertaken by the Farm Crops Department was the management of the
Seed Testing Laboratory, cereal investigation, cooperative extension work with
farmers, and research in chemical weed control. Many of these projects were
joint cooperative arrangements with the USDA. In 1971, the Department was
renamed Agronomic Crop Science and again, in 1977, to Crop Sciences. In 1990,
the Crop Science and Soil Science Departments merged to form the Department of
Crop and Soil Science.
Content Description
This collection consists of photographs from the Farm Crops Department.
Most of the photographs are identified and half are dated. Six of the images
listed on the original inventory are missing and noted in the updated
inventory. The images primarily depict plants such as barnyard grass seedlings,
phorium, and fescue undergoing experimentation and land under cultivation by
both horse drawn and mechanical farm equipment at the Oregon Experiment
Station. Department staff, such as Ritchie Cowan, H.A. Schoth and Dr. Frakes,
are also depicted in these photographs.
All of the photographs are black and white prints and there are three
negatives.

Related Materials :
OSU's status as Oregon's designated land grant college has placed
agricultural research as a primary focus for the university. In addition to the
photographs and records of the Crop Science Department (RG 95), materials
relating to OSU's role in agricultural research include the records and
photographs of the Agricultural Experiment Station (RG 25, P 29), College of
Agricultural Sciences (RG 158, P 36), and the Bioresource Engineering
Department (RG 1, P 106).
