Biographical Note

Lawrence Conolly was a Spokane attorney who, in 1942, purchased the assets of the insolvent Exchange National Bank, which had gone into receivership in January, 1929. The stock market crash and ensuing depression made debt collection extremely difficult. The shareholder’s agent had recovered as many of the assets as possible and it fell to Connolly to attempt to collect the remaining outstanding debts.

Content Description

The bulk of the collection consists of the receiver’s files, 1929-1937. However, the files also include bank correspondence prior to receivership, 1924-1929, and Connolly’s correspondence attempting to collect the remaining debt., 1942-1954. The individual files reveal the g rowing indebtedness through the late 1920s and the hardship the Depression inflicted on many residents of the Inland Empire.
