Overview of the Collection
Historical NoteThe Committee on High School Relations was formed in 1934 in response to confusion among high school students in Oregon about academic and degree programs at the Oregon State System of Higher Education (OSSHE) institutions after the formation of OSSHE and reorganization of higher education in Oregon in the early 1930s. E.B. Lemon, Oregon State College Registrar, was chair of the committee and D.V. Poling was the High School Visitor for the OSSHE during the 1930s and 1940s. The Committee coordinated and administered contacts between the OSSHE institutions and high schools and the recruitment of high school students through visits to Oregon high schools, regional conferences, and the offering of state scholarships. The records are arranged in six series: I. General Correspondence, 1931-1946; II. Committee on Counseling Service, 1934-1937; III. High School Visitations by D.V. Poling; IV. State Scholarships, 1934-1946; V. High School Conferences, 1938-1943; and VI. Reports, 1933-1956.
Acquisition Information :
The bulk of the records were acquired by the Archives in the mid-1960s. A volume of annual reports was transferred from the Registrar's Office in 1993. Related Materials :Additional materials pertaining to the High School Relations Committee are part of the President's Office Records (RG 013). Records of the High School-College Relations Committee for the 1960s and early 1970s are part of the Student Affairs Records (RG 102). Detailed Description of the CollectionSeries I consists of correspondence, narrative and statistical reports, and related materials documenting the activities of the High School Relations Committee. The bulk of the correspondence is with high school administrators. Lists of faculty at Oregon State System of Higher Education insitutions that that had given high school commencement addresses are included. Presentations to conferences and meetings of school administrators and high school principals are part of the series.
Series II consists of reports on guidance conferences for high school teachers and adminstrators held throughout Oregon to provide information about academic and degree programs at OSSHE institutions and
Series III includes correspondence from high school admininistrators, reports of numbers of schools visited, and itineraries and schedules for high school visits. This series includes reports by Poling of his visits to high schools throughout the state and his critiques of the graduating seniors and calibre of senior adminstrators.
Series IV documents the application and awarding of scholarships for attendance at Oregon State System of Higher Education institutions.
Series V consists of correspondence, programs, brochures, reports, and related materials documenting regional conferences for high school seniors held throughout the state of Oregon. The purpose of the conferences were to stimulate interest in higher education among high school students and to provide the students information about academic programs at Oregon State System of Higher Education institutions.
The Reports include annual reports of the High School Relations Committee, a draft report on recommendations for high school curricula, and lists of college entrants by county. The annual reports provide detailed information on the activities of the Committee and statistics on number of visits to high schools. Several of the reports are available in both paper form and on microfilm (Feb 1934 and 1937/38 thru 1940/1941). The reports for 1934/35 and 1935/36 are only available on microfilm. The 1933 recommendation to the Chancellor proposes means to convey information to potential students through publications (the catalog) and visitations. This series also includes the Seventh Annual Report (for 1955-1956) of the Oregon State System of Higher Education High School-College Relations Committee.
