Overview of the Collection
Historical NoteThe Athenian Literary Society was established in 1892 as one of two societies for students in the Preparatory Department as preparation for public speaking. It was a co-educational society that met regularly for programs of readings, recitations, essays, and debates. The Preparatory Department offered a one-year course of study for students at least 15 years of age from small Oregon communities to prepare for admission to the college. Acquisition Information :
The records were acquired in the early-mid 1960s and microfilmed in 1967. Related Materials :The Archives collections include the records of several other literary societies, including the Adelphian, Amicitia, Feronian, Jeffersonian, Hesperian Lyceum, Sorosis, Websterian, and Zetagathean Literary Societies.
