Biographical NoteReturn to Top

The American poet Edwin Markham was born in Oregon in 1852. He studied literature at the California College in Vacaville, California, and received his teacher's certificate in 1870. In 1872 he graduated from San Jose State Normal School, and in 1873 finished his studies of classics at Christian College in Santa Rosa.

At the turn of the twentieth century, with his wife Catherine Anna Murphy and their infant son Virgil, he moved East, settling first in Brooklyn, and then on Staten Island, New York in 1901, where he made his home until he died in 1940.

Markham is best known for his protest against the exploitation of laborers in the poem "The Man with the Hoe" and for his poem, "Lincoln, the Man of the People," that he delivered at the inauguration of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D. C., in 1922.
