Historical Note
The American Association of University Professors grew out of a
conference of representatives of universities called in 1913 by the faculty of
Johns Hopkins University. The Association was established in 1915, with its
initial report, the 1915 Declaration of Principles, as the basis for all
subsequent elaborations of policy. The principles were refined in 1940 with the
Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure, issued jointly with the
Association of American Colleges. From its beginnings in 1915 with a membership
of over 1300 full professors, the AAUP membership has grown to exceed sixty
thousand faculty members in all ranks and disciplines in the 1960s. The
Washington State University Chapter was active by at least 1930.
