Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Orville Kofoid graduated from Oregon State College in 1932 with a BS in civil engineering. He worked for the Oregon State Highway Department from 1932 until 1939; during that time, he was assigned occasional projects at Oregon State College. From 1940 to 1946, Kofoid worked for the 13th Naval District Headquarters in Seattle. He returned to Corvallis in 1947 as an Associate Professor in the Civil Engineering Department, a post he held untli 1966.

Kofoid was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1909; he died in King County, Washington, in 1994.

The Orville Kofoid Journals consist of four journals created by Kofoid documenting primarily his work as a civil engineer. Many of the daily journal entries describe his consulting work on concrete strength analysis of bridges, warehouses, piers, and other structures in the Puget Sound and Portland areas. The journals also include details of his personal activities including lawn work, car maintenance, social engagements, and home construction projects. A newspaper clipping about his 1950 divorce from Geraldine H. Overhulse Kofoid is included in one of the journals.

Custodial History

These journals were found among the materials of Robert W. Henderson, by Henderson's daughter. Henderson was the next door neighbor of Kofoid in Corvallis.

Acquisition Information

The journals were donated to the Archives in 2009 by the daughter of Robert W. Henderson.

Photographs of Kofoid are available in the Bill Reasons (P 151) and President's Office (P 092) Photographic Collections. The Archives' holdings include several collections of engineering alumni and faculty including the papers of Grant A. Covell, John H., Gallagher, Sr., Samuel H. Graf, John W.
