Joseph W. Dyson (1889-1965) was a graduate of Central College, Fayette, Missouri. In 1919 he was sent as a missionary teacher to Soochow University, Taipei, Taiwan (Formosa), supported by the Southern Methodist Church. In 1959, then retired, he was sent by the Board of Missions, Methodist Church, to Soochow University as head of the English Department. The papers consist of personal and official letters, reports, and mementos relating to Dyson's service at Soochow from 1959-1965.

The Joseph W. Dyson papers consist of correspondence, reports, financial records, publications, and memorabilia from his service as head of the English Department at Soochow University, Taipei, Taiwan (Formosa), 1959-1965. The papers retain Dyson's original order, and are roughly grouped into correspondence; personal and institutional financial papers; miscellaneous reports, notes and memorabilia; and choral music. Loose volumes include several years of the Soochow University Annual. The collection is primarily of interest as a record of the duties of a Christian educator at Soochow University, and his relationship with students and colleagues as documented in the correspondence.
