fragmentary family and personal papers of Dill and his second wife, Mabel A.

Biographical Note
Clarence Dill came to Spokane in 1908. He taught at Lewis and Clark
High School for two years then established a law practice. Dill became
secretary to Washington governor Ernest Lister in 1913, and was elected as a
Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1914. He served as senator,
1922-1935. During that time he was instrumental in securing support for the
construction of Grand Coulee Dam. An autobiographical book,
Where Water Falls (1970), details his
lobbying efforts for the dam. Dill’s other legislative and legal interests
included public broadcasting, taxation, and American Indian affairs.
Content Description
The collection includes typescripts of some of Dill’s speeches to
congress and public organizations, 1916-1972; manuscripts of Dill’s published
and unpublished books, including
Where Water Falls, and research material (correspondence,
documents, and photographs) relating to manuscripts, fragmentary correspondence
relating to Dill’s private law practice in Spokane, 1953-1975; a large
collection of documents and ephemeral items relating to hydroelectric power
projects and public utilities; and a few family and personal documents of Dill
and his second wife, Mabel A. Dill. The location of Dill’s congressional papers
is unknown.
