Overview of the Collection
Historical NoteThe Women’s Commercial Club of Seattle, founded in 1910, was an organization of Seattle women in business and professions. In 1914, an article about the club in Collier’s reported a membership of over 100 women, including “an architect, a dentist, a surgeon, an editor, several printers, a florist, and the proprietor of a livery barn.” Club activities appear to have included both social functions and business-related meetings and tours. As of the Collier’s article’s printing, the Club was led by Zamora Criswell Cauffman (president) and Mrs. Jesse Monroe Lightfoot (secretary). Cauffman owned the Cauffman Company Factory Hair Store, and Lightfoot worked as a clerk and secretary at Pacific Telephone and Telegraph and Stuff Printing Concern, Ltd. Shortly thereafter, Mrs. E.M. Rhodes, Mrs. Leone S. Vanasse, and Mrs. Louisa Lepper took over as president, secretary, and treasurer. Lepper was the director of Lepper’s School of Physical Education. In 1915, Mrs. Inez Z. Morgan served as Club secretary. The Women’s Commercial Club disappears from the Seattle City Directory listings after 1915.
