Summary
The collection consists of photographs and slides taken by Sam Blackwell, instructor at Lane Community College. The photographs were taken of buildings and grounds and classroom activities on the LCC main campus and other college locations. The collection also includes photographs of Blackwell’s family, travels in the US and abroad, and his service in the U.S. Army in France during World War II.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Samuel E. Blackwell was born in 1917 in Amarillo, Texas. He received a B.S. in Business Administration, 1939, from Abilene Christian College and an M.S. in Public Relations and Advertising from the School of Journalism at Syracuse University in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army, 1942-1946. Sam Blackwell died in 2005.

He taught at Lane Community College from 1968 to 2000. He taught communication skills in the English/Language Arts Department from 1968-1986 and co-authored a textbook for the course. He taught photography in the Mass Communications Department from 1968-1971 and in Adult Education (Continuing Education) from 1972-2000.

He traveled extensively. As an instructor for TraveLearn, a travel/study program of Continuing Education, he taught photography and led tours to Alaska, Egypt, and the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador.

Blackwell had a professional photography career in the aerospace, commercial, industrial, advertising, illustrative, and public relations fields. He has won numerous professional awards for journalism, photography, teaching, and volunteerism.

Sam Blackwell died in 2005.

The Samuel Blackwell Photographs and Papers contain black/white and color photographs, negatives, contact sheets, and color slides taken on the campuses of Lane Community College.

TThe Blackwell collection contains photographs and negatives of views of students in classrooms and participating in activities in a variety of courses offered by the Adult Education and Continuing Education programs. In addition to photographs taken on the main campus, the collection includes a series of photographs taken at other college locations such as the Downtown Center in Eugene, LCC at Florence, LCC at Cottage Grove, and Community Learning Centers located in high schools in the county. The collection also includes photographic prints and slides taken of buildings on the Lane main campus including images of buildings under construction.

Blackwell led overseas tours as part of a program at LCC called TraveLearn which combined travel and instruction. He taught photography on the tours he led to Europe, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Australia and New Zealand and the collection contains photographs and slides taken on these travels.

Sam Blackwell was in the medical corps during WWII and served in France, 1944-1946. He took photographs of soldiers, prisoners-of-war, and French towns and countryside showing local residents and damage to buildings from bombing and fighting. The collection includes photographic prints, negatives, albums, a negative log book, and exhibits.

Records were donated by Sam Blackwell to the college archives in four accessions between 2000 and 2002 and by the family in 2008.

This series contains photographs and negatives of scenes of Continuing Education / Adult Education classes taken between 1989 and 1998 at LCC. Series D: Photographs, Community Learning Centers
The Community Learning Centers were classrooms located in high schools in Lane County including Oakridge, Elmira, Junction City, McKenzie, Thurston, Willamette, Churchill. Series E: Photographs, LCC Main Campus - Buildings, Constructions, Seasons
This series contains black/white and color prints and negatives taken of buildings on the Lane main campus including images of buildings under construction. There are numerous photographs of the construction of the Performing Arts Building in 1973-1974. There are also several images of the campus in winter covered with snow, and in spring with trees and flowers in bloom. This series contains photograph prints and negatives depicting a variety of scenes and activities including travels in the U.S., Europe, some on TraveLearn tours; family and family trips; work in New Mexico and Oregon; and various photos taken in Oregon and elsewhere in the West. Series K: Oversized Photographs
The over-sized photographs are mostly black/white, and are both mounted and unmounted, 14 x 11”. The images depicted include a study of hands and scenic views in the U.S. and Europe. There are nine views of the city of Eugene dating from 1895 to 1959. These images are reproductions of historical photographs; the original photographer is unknown. The photographs are mounted and measure 16” x 20”. This series also includes photographs and newspaper articles (1985, 1995) featuring Blackwell and his photographs taken in Europe during WWII as well as of military cemeteries in France, Gettysburg, and France taken in 2001-2004.
