Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Ruth Thayer Raymond ("Teddy") graduated from Oregon Agricultural College in 1919 with a BS degreee in home economics. She graduated from Raymond (Washington) High School in 1915. She was a member of Delta Psi sorority at OAC.

Raymond taught domestic science and arts at the South Bend High School (Washington) from 1919 until the early 1930s and then taught home economics in Tacoma, Washington, through the early 1950s. In 1921/22, she taught home economics in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Raymond returned to OAC for graduate study in 1925/26 and also attended the 1938 summer session.

The Thayer Raymond Collection consists of a photograph album compiled by Raymond; several loose photographs; and a sound recording. The photograph album includes photographs and memorabilia of Raymond's student years in high school and college; automobile camping trips; and the beginning of her teaching career at South Bend High School in Washington. Of particular note are photographs of a high school drama production; students and student activities; the Raymond family; outings, picnics, camping, and automobile trips; the Oregon Agricultural College campus; a view of 4th Street in Corvallis, Oregon; and the town of and region around Raymond, Washington. Memorabila includes dance cards, clippings, and a 1919 commencement program and invitation.

The loose photographs include a color photographic print of Thayer Raymond made in the late 1980s or early 1990s. The sound recording is a 12-inch 33 1/3 rpm disk of Thayer Raymond speaking in an Oregon State College Speech Department voice and diction class recorded in the summer of 1938.
