Historical NoteReturn to Top

Cachot Therkelsen was born on March 30, 1894 in San Francisco, California, and was educated at Stanford University. In 1921 he commenced business as a realtor in Portland, Oregon, first with various associates, and on his own after 1935. He founded the Therkelsen Investment Company. In addition to buying and selling residences and commercial buildings, he also collected original plans and specifications to asses property values for investment purposes.

Mr. Therkelsen lived in Palatine Hill, a prestigious area in Portland, with his wife and daughter. He died on May 12, 1964 at the age of 70.

The Cachot Therkelsen Collection consists primarily of architectural drawings. They are arranged by type of building and include plans of apartments, banks, office buildings, hotels, residences, stores, and theaters. Major Architects whose work in represented include: Emil Schacht, Martin Schacht, John Bennes, A. E. Doyle, and Edgar Lazarus. An index by architect appears at the end of the finding aid. The drawings are stored in flat file drawers 1-7.

The collection also contains 28 free-standing volumes of statistical material on building properties, rental and lease records, and appraisal records.

Finally, twelve albums of photographs of buildings primarily in Oregon and Washington are stored separately in the photograph collection. These include photographs of buildings in Idaho (Nampa), Oregon (Astoria, Baker, Canby, Corvallis, Eugene, Grants Pass, Klamath Falls, La Grande, Lakeview, McMinnville, Marshfield, Medford, Oregon City, Pendleton, Roseburg, Salem, The Dalles), and Washington (Aberdeen, Bremerton, Kelso, Longview, Port Angeles, Spokane, Tacoma, Vancouver, Wenatchee, Yakima).
