Overview of the Collection
Historical NoteThese basketball and field hockey teams were under the jurisdiction of the Women's Recreation Association (WRA). From the 1940s until 1973, the WRA was responsible for coordination and administration of athletics for women, both intramurals and intercollegiate. Oregon State had one of the largest women's athletics programs in the northwest and, during the 1960s, about a third of the women students were involved in WRA activities. In addition to basketball and field hockey, women's sports included volleyball, softball, tennis, golf, swimming, bowling, archery, track, and gymnastics. Most of these were intramural teams; however, the Northwest Field Hockey Association was formed in 1938 and Oregon State women competed with field hockey teams from Oregon and Washington schools. Content DescriptionThe Oregon State University Women's Basketball and Field Hockey Scrapbooks document the women's basketball and field hockey teams for several years in the mid-1960s. The scrapbooks include color and b/w snapshot photographs, ephemera, and clippings documenting team members, games, travel, and special events. One of the scrapbooks is for the 1968 basketball team which played all of its games in February. Three of the scrapbooks are for the women's field hockey teams in 1964, 1966, and 1967. The 1966 team was known as the "Lady Tigers". The 1967 scrapbook includes 23 images as b/w contact prints. The hockey scrapbooks include information about the Willamette Valley Collegiate Field Hockey Association which selected an all-star team. The creators of the scrapbooks are not identified.
